Solo concerts

8/10/2016

In the past few years, I have been playing mostly with people in different ensemble in concert and theater settings. Solo concerts have been less frequent. Recently I understood something essential yet obivous : playing a full solo concert and renew/revisit repertoire is a physical and spiritual need for me. I need the challenage to stay mentally, physically, and artistically  healthy.

Playing solo concert is like a rebirth for me, and everytime before the concert, I come through a short and dark period of self-doubt. Can I remember this piece from 10 years ago in just a few days? Can I improvise with no plans? Can I play such a program just a few days after landing in Denmark?  Will this program be too wild in a small church like this? Designing a program which fits my current interest, stamina, and the venue takes some patience, analyzation, intuition and time.

For example, the program for tomorrow's concert," Autumn Ceremony" took me really months to develop. I made several versions of the program, and nothing felt right. 1 day after visiting the church, a united program with "Autumn Ceremony" as the title appeared in my mind during a sleepless midnight. Boom. That's it.

This was 5 days ago.

I am curious about how the concert will go tomorrow. I can't know until tomorrow. The only thing I am certain is, I am a new musician and a woman everytime after playing a solo concert.
