Ancestral Modernism: Element 2021
I have been reflecting about what kind of contemporary music speaks the most directly to me. I will definitely say, music that is created as a result of meditating, researching, and thus mastering certain elements has been my deep inspiration. Composers like Pierluigi Billone, Iannis Xenakis, and Guo Wenjing have definitely mastered on certain element, and their work has a potential to be a tradition.
I am enormously fascinated by traditional music in general for the same reason. For example, traditional Korean, Javanese, and Indan percussion is a result of their ancestors meditating deeply and radically on certain elements - which made it possible to create thousands of combiation of rhythm and tones with only one element - a universe of its own. It fascinates and amazes me when I hear music and musicians mastering a specific elements.
The above are inspirations behind my new concert-series, Elements, exploring one or multiple primitive elements - stone, water, fire, wood, metal, etc- in depths. Each concert is a radical meditations of materials, sound, and humanity. The concert-series aims to bring profound - and almost forgotten - experiences back to the modern life.
