The stereotypes of contemporary music:
1. It has to be dissonant. At least most parts.
2. It shouldn't be too emotional. Seriousness is preferred.
3. It should not express the heart.
4. Somehow it has to be at least a little ugly. It cannot be too beautiful.
5. It should be quite difficult to play, or at least mildly difficult to play. (Simplicity will make institutions doubt if you can actually compose).
6. It has to be brainy and intellectual.
7. It has to be composed rather recently, but if it is recent yet tonal or simple, then it is not contemporary music. But if it is quite old yet difficult to listen to, then it is still contemporary music.
8. It has to be very controlled- the more specification with details the better.
9. It has to have a scientific nature. One must not repeat anything that was done before.
I think many are still traumatized by Schoenberg. Luckily many composers dare to be themselves without giving a damn to these taboos, which allowed them to be truly original.

In short: Contemporary music for me is about freedom to explore anything. The poetic and the ugly. The crude and the delicate. The erotic and the moral. Amorous and the coldness. High-tec robot and nostalgia. The neat organization and the uncontrollable mess. Stillness and busy-ness. Humor and deaden seriousness. Infinite possibilities...
It was intended to more freedom, I believe.
