[Pop Music v.s. Porn Music]
I like good pop music, but good pop music should not be confused with porn music. Authentic pop music (or any style of music) is timeless and it effortlessly leads one to slip into the magic of certain era. One can travel back and experience the past the way it was with such honest music.
Conversely, porn music, like porn movies, is often there to make short-lived stimulation and to numb your ability to sense. The purpose is to please and sell the collective standard, killing your creativity and individuality, perhaps quite subconsciously. The music is often overly-amplified (so you cannot hear the nuances anymore) and somehow exaggerated (in order to convince you), and therefore “ cheesy.” Porn music may be relieving to listen to, but it can contribute to collective numbness. Ironically, this music is widely played in beautiful cafes, high-quality restaurants, and even yoga and meditation places, and I can’t help to wonder why.
All music is powerful; nothing wrong with porn music. One can slip into a certain timeframe with any style and quality of music, mixed with our personal memories. I have a special relationship with a few examples of porn music too, because this music reminds me of something far back, and I can access these memories and my past belief system only through these porn music. However, I will be a little concerned if porn music is almost the only music most people are exposed to. I suspect those who grew up with porn music have not had chance to deepen their sense of beauty and may not be able to tolerate silence.
If the “standard way” of making music becomes “the way”, then it is alarming. It is like believing what is going on in porn movies is really what sex is about. Enjoy the porn music once a while but know that it is porn music, that’s the freedom, so you are not judging it either.
